High Pressure Cell

High-pressure cells are used to study how materials behave under extreme force in scientific research (spectroscopy, rheology) and for monitoring structural integrity in large construction projects like dams, tunnels, and embankments, acting as sensors to convert pressure into electrical signals for safety and stability assessment. They allow analysis of fluids and solids under conditions where they might vaporize or change properties, crucial for fields from aerospace to food science.
In Scientific Research & Material Science
Spectroscopy: For absorption, fluorescence, Raman studies of liquids and solids.
Rheology: To test how materials like polymers, food products (chocolate, dairy), or asphalt flow and deform under pressure, even above their normal boiling points.
Material Characterization: Studying volatile substances or advanced materials like liquid crystals and microelectronics.
In Geotechnical & Civil Engineering (Structural Monitoring)
Geotechnical Monitoring: Measuring total stress in soil, rock, and concrete in dams, tunnels, retaining walls, and embankments.
Construction Safety: Assessing the adequacy of tunnel linings (shotcrete) and monitoring foundation loads.
Interface Pressure: Measuring contact pressure between structures (like dam foundations) and the ground.
How They Work (Sensor Type)
Hydraulic Cells: Use oil-filled cavities between steel plates that deform under pressure, changing the hydraulic pressure read by a transducer.
Vibrating Wire Cells: Similar hydraulic principle, but the pressure changes the tension on a vibrating wire, altering its frequency.
Electrical/Resistive Cells: Use strain gauges on a diaphragm; pressure deforms the diaphragm, changing the electrical resistance.
